About Movement Pilates Studio is now offering private and duet sessions on the key piece of Gyrotonic equipment: the Pulley Tower Combination Unit and GYROKINESIS® private, duet, trio, quad sessions and classes. For those of you who work at a desk for eight hours a day and go to a massage therapist every week to "ask for help," Gyrotonic exercise may be the gift you have been waiting for.

The Gyrotonic Expansion System has already caught on with dancers, martial artists, physical rehab patients and many celebrities including fitness enthusiast Madonna, who is now using Gyrotonic exercise to help maintain her long, lean physique. Gyrotonic exercises are helping dancers enhance their turns, golfers and tennis players improve their swings, rehab patients recover more quickly and ordinary men and women reshape their bodies.

The circular, spiraling and undulating movements that characterize Gyrotonic exercise help to increase the functional capacity of the spine, resulting in improved balance and coordination. "As a Feldenkrais practitioner, I immediately fell in love with the Gyrotonic Expansion System because it focuses on integrating the movement of your entire body," says About Movement owner Melissa Wirsig.

Juliu Horvath, the founder of the Gyrotonic Expansion System, was a principal dancer with the Romanian State Opera Ballet, and later, the New York City Opera and the Houston Ballet. He retired from his dance career when he ruptured his Achilles tendon and damaged several discs in his back. He retreated to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands to recover and regroup. It was out of this experience that he developed Gyrokinesis.

Because he was too injured to sit on the floor, Gyrokinesis encompasses exercises done sitting on small stools that allow freedom in the hips and back as well as exercises done in lying and standing positions. Later Juliu designed equipment to use in his method of exercise and called this form of his work Gyrotonic. Both are based on Juliu's method of working the body in the path of its natural energy flow and using the breath to open restricted areas of the body.

Juliu believes that exercise should be a creative and playful experience. "I want music in my body, and I want poetry in my body, and I want it to be skillful and without struggle; it has to come without struggle." He not only succeeded in repairing the injuries that he had sustained using these new methodologies, but he also created a system of exercises that anyone can perform, regardless of their age or state of health.
